Finding the true bearings using a Portland or Breton Plotter is quite straightforward. In this short theory clip we will be looking at laying off true back bearings that we have obtained by compass for two buoys in order to find our true position. .<div class="fb-like" data-href="http://www.maritimebookshop.co.uk/video-2.htm" data-layout="button_count" data-action="like" data-show-faces="true" data-share="true"></div>

For practical navigation purposes of course there will be several anomalies that would exert an influence on our compass bearings and these would need to be taken account. These anomalies are principally Magnetic Variation and Deviation. We will take a closer look at both these later on in detail and learn to apply the appropriate errors.
For the moment though we can ignore the and concentrate on the basic mechanics of using bearings for chart work and navigation. [ Return to Videos ]
